The Chase Freedom® has unveiled its bonus categories for the fourth quarter of 2018, and they might be particularly helpful for those who are already eyeing their holiday shopping lists.

From Oct. 1 through Dec. 31, 2018, the card’s 5% cash-back categories will be:

  • Chase Pay.

  • Wholesale clubs.

  • Department stores.

Cardholders earn 5% cash back in these categories on up to $1,500 in combined purchases, and 1% back on all other purchases. Cardholders must go online to activate the categories to earn 5% cash back. As long as you activate the categories by Dec. 14, you'll get the elevated rate on purchases made over the whole quarter.

Wholesale clubs and department stores have been bonus categories for the Chase Freedom® in years past. And this marks the second time this year that the Chase Pay mobile wallet has been among the card's quarterly bonus categories.

“Our customers told us they liked having mobile wallets as a category, so we’re bringing Chase Pay back this quarter along with two other favorites — wholesale clubs and department stores,” said BJ Mahoney, general manager of Chase Freedom, in a news release. The Chase Freedom® is a Visa, so it can be used at Costco wholesale clubs, which accepts only Visa-branded credit cards.

To earn bonus points via Chase Pay, you can download the app and use it at brick-and-mortar merchants that accept the payment method, and you can also sign up to use Chase Pay at eligible online retailers. Chase lists Shell, Starbucks and Walmart.com as examples of retailers that accept Chase Pay.
